Rent in Bangkok, how much?

‘How much does it cost to rent in Bangkok?’ is a question I’m often asked.

The truth is that whatever your property budget, you can find somewhere.

If you only have a couple o thousand baht to your name then expect to be living in shoebox some way from any of the city’s mass-transit lines, but for less than THB 2,000 per month you can find something perfectly reasonable.

You will not find many real estate agencies operating in the price bracket, or indeed at less than THB 10,000 per month in almost all cases. It’s simply not worth their while – or their commission.

The best way to find places below THB 10,000 is “borrow” a Thai friend and use your feet to explore the small sois in your preferred area. Within minutes you’ll likely find signs in Thai offering suitable Bangkok properties for rent.

When agents come into the picture, this information (above) from one of the more prominent agencies shows how most of their business is being transacted between THB 10,000 and THB 30,000 per month.

At that price you can easily find a small (30 sqm) studio of one-bedroom unit close to mass-transit networks, although don’t expect it to be close to the centre of the city.

So essentially, whatever your budget for rent in Bangkok, the city something for you. Even if your budget is modest you’ll still be able to find something.

Note: The author is currently renting a 70 sqm two-bedroom unit with ample space on the Thonburi side of Bangkok. It’s possible to get big spaces if you’re prepared to look.
